EGGS
ELEGANT: A TREASURED PYSANKA D'ART
WORKSHOPS
Ukrainian
Easter Eggs are most widely known and recognized as "object
d'art" throughout the world. This art form has been passed
down through generations of Ukrainians and can be traced back
to 2000-2500 BC.
Participants
in the workshops will discover this ancient and intricate art.
This is a hands-on workshop. Participants will learn the wax resist
method of egg dyeing and will leave with a finished PYSANKA
or Two and hopefully acquire the basic knowledge and tools to
continue this beautiful craft at home or as pre-requisite to more
advanced classes. The symbolism and cultural significance of this
good luck-filled craft will be discussed during the workshop.
Special emphasis will be placed on meaning of symbols and colors
since no two pysanky are exactly alike, each holds its own special
identity and carries its own message. Participants will become
aware of the traditional geometric and floral patterns, animal
motifs, and authentic symbols, which are intricately woven into
the designing of each egg.
REQUIREMENTS: General Guidelines
TIME:
Ideally an average workshop requires between 2 to 3 hours duration
in order to have a finished Pysanka in one session. Workshops
can be designed to meet 3 to 5 times per week.
SIZE
OF CLASS: Ideal class size between 5 to 10 students in order
to give individual, one-on-one attention to each student. LARGER
classes can be accommodated.
PARTICIPANTS:
Individuals of 11 years of age and older may participate. Participants
must be able to hold kistka or stylus (tool used to write on the
egg) in one hand while holding the raw egg in the other hand.
***PARTICIPANTS NEED NOT BE ARTISTIC*** Enthusiasm, the spirit
of adventure and the willingness of following instructions is
more important.
READING
AND MATH: Participants should be able to comprehend instructions
and follow verbal direction. During more advanced workshops, participants
will learn how to use the compass and simple math, i.e., fractions,
in trying to section off the egg in order to obtain symmetry of
design. Triangles, angles, square, circles and rectangles are
used to form the different designs on the eggs.
THE
INSTRUCTOR SHALL PROVIDE:
EGGS-
Raw eggs are used since the dye adheres better to raw eggs. They
must be fresh, not washed and have a nice shape without blemishes,
bumps, or scratches. Nest eggs are best.
DYES-
pre-mixed in jars or metal containers and ready to use. Spoons
for dyes.
